First Impressions competition: March 27 2008

This week’s competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a feminist treatment of American slavery:

“I was born a slave; but I never knew it until six years of happy childhood had passed awayâ€

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is 2 April.

The winner of last week’s competition, who identified The Red and the Black by Stendhal, is Brian Stabler of Beverley, East Yorkshire.
