The University of Glasgow has named Andy Schofield, currently vice-chancellor of Lancaster University, as its next principal.
Professor Schofield will join Glasgow in September 2025, taking up the post on the retirement of Sir Anton Muscatelli, who has led the institution since 2009.
The theoretical physicist has led Lancaster since 2020 and before that held a series of senior roles at the University of Birmingham, ending up as pro vice-chancellor and head of the College of Engineering and Physical Science. He spent much of his early career as a research fellow at the University of Cambridge.
Gavin Stewart, Glasgowâs convenor of court, said he was âdelightedâ with the appointment.

Professor Schofield said that it was a âgreat honourâ to take over at the helm of the institution.
âGlasgow is an impressive, world-changing institution which has made huge strides under Sir Antonâs leadership. I very much look forward to building on his legacy and working with a brilliant set of colleagues to take the university forward,â Professor Schofield said.
