Thomas Bingham , senior lord of appeal in ordinary, has been appointed high steward by the chancellor of the University of Oxford .

The Scottish Executive has appointed: Noni Cobban , researcher in the Dementia Services Development Centre at the University of Stirling, to the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care; and Cherry Rowlings , professor of social work in the same department at Stirling, to the Scottish Social Services Council.

The University of Greenwich has appointed Linda Cording , formerly of Brunel University, university secretary.

Paul Draper , professor of finance at the University of Edinburgh's management school, has been appointed head of the University of Exeter 's school for business and economics.

Mari Fitzduff , director of the University of Ulster's Institute for Conflict Resolution, has been appointed to the council of the Carter Center at Emory University in the United States.

David Heely , former head of psychology at St Andrews University, has joined Abertay Dundee University as professor of experimental psychology and vision science.

The Department for Education and Skills has appointed Janice Shiner , currently principal of Leicester College of Further Education, director general for lifelong learning.

Sir Peter Williams , who recently resigned as master of St Catherine's College, Oxford, has been appointed chairman of the Engineering and Technology Board , which will take over the Engineering Council.

The University of Teesside has appointed Yau Jim Yip , previously of the University of North London, director of the school of computing and mathematics.

Lola Young , professor of cultural studies at Middlesex University and project director of the Archives Museum of Black Heritage, has been appointed head of culture at the Greater London Authority .
