Subject: Proposal for a Council Decision authorising the placing on the market of sweet corn from genetically modified maize line Bt11 as a novel food or novel food ingredient under Regulation (EC) No 258/97 of the European Parliament and of the Council
1. The Commission submitted the above proposal on 30 January 2004, in the absence of a favourable opinion from the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health.
2. On 7 April 2004 Coreper found there to be no qualified majority for or against the proposed Decision, with delegations' positions remaining as stated in the Standing Committee.

3. The Council has therefore to ascertain whether there may have been any change in delegations' positions.
Failing a decision by the Council, the Commission will be able to adopt its proposal as from 1 May 2004.
