Englandās higher education regulator isĀ launching aĀ new āstudent interest boardā, which will incorporate studentsā unions and university staff asĀ well asĀ current learners.
for the new Office for Students committee, which will replace the watchdogās existing student panel.
The OfS said the membership would be āaĀ mix ofĀ students, staff and officers from studentsā unions, staff from universities and colleges who work on student issues, and others who can share on studentsā interestsā.
The shift responds to long-running criticism of the regulatorās engagement with students. The independent review of the OfS by SirĀ David Behan ā now the organisationās interim chair ā concluded that āthere was broad consensus that student voice and perspective was noticeably absent from the OfSā.

In his report, Sir David criticised aĀ ālack of meaningful engagement with student bodiesā, including the National Union of Students and campus studentsā unions, and said the existing panel was ānot aĀ source of intelligence on student prioritiesā, and as such members ābelieved they did not have the opportunity to input on the issues they felt were most important to studentsā.
The OfS said the new student interest board would be a committee of the main OfS board, as recommended by SirĀ David.

Susan Lapworth, the OfSā chief executive, said the new board was āaĀ critical part of our new approach to working with studentsā.
āIt will provide us with a diverse range of experiences and insight from students, from those working in policy development, and from people with experience of working with and for students,ā MsĀ Lapworth said.
āThis mix of members will ensure weāre hearing strong student voices, and also the contributions of those who work closely with students, and who can bring their experiences and expertise to our work.
āIād encourage anyone who is committed to working with us to improve the experiences of students across the country to apply.ā
