Below is a statement from Edward Kemp, spokesman, U.S. Mission to the EU, following the EU's decision April 15 to require that U.S. corn gluten be certified free of Bt-10 corn:

Certification of U.S. Corn Feed

We view the EU's decision to impose a certification requirement on U.S. corn gluten due to the possible, low-level presence of Bt-10 corn to be an overreaction.

U.S. regulatory authorities have determined there are no hazards to health, safety or the environment related to Bt-10. There is no reason to expect any negative impact from the small amounts of Bt-10 corn that may have entered the EU.

All current plantings in the U.S. and seed stock have been identified and either destroyed or quarantined for future destruction. Therefore, no Bt-10 lines will be grown in the United States in 2005.

U.S. regulators are continuing to cooperate with the Commission to provide additional information.
