Tashkent State Medical University is a public medical university in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, established in 2025 through the merger of Tashkent Medical Academy, Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute, and Tashkent State Dental Institute. Although newly established, the university builds upon a medical education tradition dating back to 1919, when the Medical Faculty of Turkestan State University was first founded.

As Director, Research Ethics and Compliance, you will provide strategic leadership for UNSW's research ethics and compliance framework, ensuring the University's world-class research is supported by best-practice governance and regulatory oversight.

Reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor Research, you will lead the Research Ethics and Compliance Support function and drive the strategic direction of research ethics and compliance across a complex and research-intensive environment. You will influence institutional policy, provide authoritative advice on complex ethical and regulatory matters, and help shape a culture that balances innovation, research excellence and public trust.

Overseeing a broad portfolio that includes Animal Care and Ethics, Human Research Ethics, Biosafety and Radiation Safety Governance, clinical trials governance, defence trade controls and other research-related compliance activities, you will work closely with senior leaders, committee chairs, researchers, administrators and regulatory agencies to manage risk, strengthen governance frameworks and support responsible research practices across the University.

As a key member of the Division of Research and Enterprise leadership team, you will lead the Research Ethics and Compliance Support unit, with responsibility for its strategic planning, operational performance, financial management and people leadership. Through your expertise and influence, you will help ensure UNSW remains at the forefront of ethical, impactful and globally respected research.

Your Responsibility

Your key responsibilities include:


	Design and Develop Research: Formulate clear research objectives and contribute to the development of proposals for individual and collaborative projects, applying established and emerging methodologies to advance the research agenda.
	Conduct and Analyze Research: Collect, manage, and rigorously analyze complex datasets; interpret results; critically evaluate existing literature; and generate original insights that align with project goals.
	Disseminate Findings: Prepare high-quality manuscripts for submission to leading journals, present research at national and international conferences, and contribute to the visibility and impact of the research team.
	Secure Funding: Identify opportunities and contribute to the preparation of competitive grant applications to national and international funding bodies.

About You


	Qualifications: PhD awarded within 3 years in business administration, computer science, information systems, data science, or a related discipline.
	Programming & Data Skills: Strong proficiency in Python (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow); additional experience with R, MATLAB, or Julia is an advantage.
	Machine Learning Expertise: Familiarity with causal machine learning, ensemble methods, and deep learning architectures (CNNs, RNNs). Experience with explainable AI (e.g., SHAP, LIME) is preferred.
	Quantitative Analysis: Demonstrated ability to handle multimodal datasets, conduct statistical analysis, and apply predictive modeling and validation techniques.
	Research & Publication: Skilled at critically reviewing literature, designing rigorous studies, and producing publications for high-impact journals.
	Collaboration & Communication: Excellent oral and written English communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly. Knowledge of Chinese is a plus. Ability to work both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
	Practical Experience: Prior hands-on research in AI applications / digital innovations in water ecological environment will be an asset.

Prof. Ying Weng is Course Director for Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence, Professor in Computer Science. She received the Newton Research Collaboration Award by UK Royal Academy of Engineering, Best Paper Award at International Conference on Automation & Computing, and 1st Place Prize in the international ASNR-MICCAI BraTS Challenges. About the Project. This project focuses on research in Explainable Artificial Intelligence and Causal Machine Learning, applied to the intelligent monitoring and early warning of key water ecological environment indices, including prediction and management tasks. A network of reservoirs forms the backbone of the region’s water resource infrastructure, playing an essential role in ensuring urban water supply, mitigating flood risks, and supporting agricultural irrigation. However, the intricate interactions between natural hydrological cycles — such as precipitation and evaporation — and human operational controls, including release scheduling and storage regulation, introduce substantial complexity. This dynamic interplay makes the multi-reservoir system both ideal and challenging for developing advanced spatiotemporal forecasting models. By integrating causal inference with interpretable AI techniques, the project aims not only to improve prediction accuracy but also to uncover underlying cause-effect relationships, thereby enabling transparent, reliable early warnings for sustainable water resources development.

Candidates are expected to submit a research proposal that builds on this project summary.

Your Remuneration, Benefits and Support

You will be offered a fixed term contract with University of Nottingham Ningbo China for 2 years. You will be offered a minimum annual salary package of RMB272,606 with competitive benefits package. Postdoctoral Research Fellow is also able to apply RMB50,000 research funding after they start their research.

For an experienced workplace and industrial relations leader who combines deep technical expertise with strong people leadership, sound judgement and a practical approach to problem-solving, this is an opportunity to have significant influence across UniSC. You will  Lead, coach and develop a team of workplace relations and business partnering professionals, creating a high-performing, accountable and client-focused culture. Provide hands-on leadership of complex and sensitive employee and workplace relations matters, stepping in directly where senior expertise, judgement or escalation is required. Lead and advise on sensitive conduct matters, including gender-based violence, sexual harassment and other harmful behaviours, ensuring responses are trauma-informed, procedurally fair and appropriately risk-managed. Negotiate and influence outcomes on complex people matters, balancing legislative, industrial, employee and organisational considerations. Build trusted relationships with senior leaders, providing strategic and risk-informed advice to navigate workforce challenges and support effective decision-making. Maintain strong operational oversight across Workplace Relations and Business Partnering, ensuring priorities, workloads and complex matters are actively managed through to resolution. Contribute to enterprise bargaining and lead key workforce and organisational projects that strengthen capability and service delivery. Advocate for the University's interests, working with investigators and legal counsel and representing UniSC at tribunals, commissions and other external forums as required. You'll bring significant experience navigating complex workplace relations environments, including sensitive conduct matters and gender-based violence, sexual harassment or related harmful behaviours. You combine empathy and trauma-informed practice with procedural fairness, sound judgement and a clear understanding of organisational risk. Calm under pressure, you bring clarity to complexity and look for practical ways forward. You're a collaborative, resilient and considered leader who builds confidence and capability in others while remaining accountable for delivering outcomes. You will possess:  A relevant qualification in human resource management, employment law, industrial relations or a related discipline, supported by a commitment to ongoing professional development. Extensive senior experience leading highly skilled Workplace Relations and/or People and Culture teams within a large and complex organisation. A demonstrated track record of leading, developing and managing high-performing professional teams, including setting priorities, managing workloads and performance, building capability and maintaining effective service delivery in a complex and high-volume environment. Extensive specialist expertise in workplace and industrial relations, including enterprise agreements, awards, employment legislation, industrial disputes, enterprise bargaining and representing or supporting an employer in tribunals, commissions or other industrial proceedings. Demonstrated experience leading and resolving complex, sensitive and high-risk workplace matters, including misconduct, unsatisfactory performance, grievances and investigations, with sound judgement across competing legal, industrial and organisational risks. Demonstrated experience managing or advising on complex matters involving gender-based violence, sexual harassment and related harmful behaviours, with an understanding of trauma-informed practice, procedural fairness and relevant legislative obligations. Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation, advocacy and influencing skills, with the credibility to build trusted relationships with Executive, senior leaders, unions and employee representatives. The ability to work primarily from UniSC's Sippy Downs campus on the Sunshine Coast for four days per week. Relocation assistance is available for successful candidates relocating from interstate.
